Tips To Keep You Safe with Your Smoke Detectors
Smoke detectors can save lives. Therefore, having one or more in your home is beneficial to protecting your family if a fire occurs. As with any home item you will have a few options to choose from, but no matter which one you choose there are some tips you can follow to help ensure they are working properly.
Tip One: Test your smoke detector in your fire alarm system. It is recommended by experts that they be tested monthly if not weekly. Each unit should have an easy access test button making this process very simple.
Tip Two: Batteries in your device should be checked every six months and changed every year. Recommendations are for the batteries to be changed when you set your clock back in the fall and then checked when you set your clocks forward in the spring. Most units will beep or chirp if the batteries are going dead giving you a warning signal to change them, but it is wise not to rely on just this as a reminder.
Tip Three: As with anything else in your home you will need to clean your smoke devices. Cleaning will be minimal, at least once a year. You can use your vacuum to do this simple task. You will basically be sweeping out the dust that has settled inside the component.
Tip Four: Painting the device is not a good idea. It may not fit in with your decor, but painting can ruin the detector so it does not work. Paint will clog the vents which will prevent smoke going to the sensors if your home would catch fire.
Tip Five: Most anything you own will eventually need some work or need replaced. This is also true when it comes to smoke alarm detectors. A good life span before replacement is approximately ten years.
